    1. Miranda Kerr wants to Save Dave - Macquarie Bank employee David Kiely got caught on national TV looking at saucy pics of Miranda Kerr and it’s grabbed the headlines around the world. Fortunately, the hot Aussie has joined the fight to save his job. Breaking News: Dave has been saved!
    2. Katie Price - Katie Price has moved on from Peter Andre and has married cage fighter Alex Reid. Glamour model and cage fighter… I’m sure their dinner table conversations are going to be rivetting. Considering their history, we’ll probably get to see just how rivetting if they launch yet another reality TV series. Can’t wait…
    3. Brittany Murphy & Casey Johnson – These two women in the prime of their lives both died mysteriously. The coroner ruled on both today saying their deaths could have been prevented. A good reminder that no one is invincible.
    4. Catch up TV - Did you miss the first week of Grey's Anatomy or Brothers and Sisters? Don't worry, you won't be behind all season. Catch up on the new Yahoo!7 TV Plus7 service.

    1. MySchools website - There's been plenty of controversy surrounding this Federal school ranking website and now principals are defending their results and unions are claiming unfairness.
    2. Apple iPad - Apple is brilliant at creating buzz and their latest innovation is no different. The newly launched iPad is like a large iPhone with multi-touch technology and is somewhere between a smartphone and a computer. To see more reviews, click here.
    3. Desalination plant - Taste anything different in your water last night? The NSW State Government hopes not. The Kurnell desalination plant opened yesterday and will now provide 15% of Sydney's water supply.
    4. Australian Open - We're at the finals end of the competition and although there aren't any Aussies left, it's still going to be an exciting weekend. Federer and Tsonga will play tonight to determine who will take on Brit Andy Murray in the Men's final. Happy Australia Day

    by Caitlin Wright

    25/01/2010

Australia Day! It's a unique holiday where we get together with friends and family, have bbqs and eat pavlova, go to the beach and enjoy the outdoors and all-in-all celebrate our identity.

We all have different experiences of being Australian. Some have lived here for generations and don't associate themselves with any other culture. Others see Australia as a land of the second chance, a place where they've been able to forge a new and more prosperous life. For others, Australia Day will always be associated with the arrival of white man on this wide brown land.

Regardless of when Australia Day is celebrated, it's important to have a day that is distinctly ours. It should be all encompassing day where we can celebrate our multicultural nation with its long and ancient history. A day where we can listen to the Triple J Hottest 100, or eat lamb or even make world records with giant inflatable thongs.

So whether you've been an Aussie for 5 minutes or 5 thousand years, Happy Australia Day! Don't drink too much, and throw another prawn on the barbie!

    Faulty fashion

    by Caitlin Wright

Being fashionable while exercising is something that I've never given a lot of thought to. I figure by the time I'm done, I'll be sporting a bright red red face and my clothes will be covered with sweat patches and a less than pleasant odour. Realistically, no one is going to look at me and think 'wow that is a particularly fetching t-shirt she's got on. I wonder where she got it?'.

However that's not how it works in the professional sporting arena. At the Australian Open this week there has been a lot of attention on the lovely lady players and their super cute tennis outfits. Maria Sharapova has been getting plenty of attention, and considering she got ousted in the first round, it's certainly not for her tennis.

The tennis court has even become a sort of catwalk for the top fashion brands. They see centre court as a place where they can launch their latest apparel and colours trends before millions of worldwide viewers.

It's pretty clever, we admire these young athletes with their healthy, lithe bodies and think, 'I wish I could have what she has. With a bit of help from Nike or Reebok, maybe I can!'

Of course, sometimes outfits don't end up as planned, and there's a bit of a malfunction. Wouldn't want to be the brand responsible for this girl's lycra body suit at a world championship bobsleigh race in Switzerland!

    Stingers of the sea

Overseas visitors are often frightened of our spiders, snakes and drop bears with good reason. However for us locals, we have a more lackadaisical attitude and scoff "it isn't that bad" as we squish a spider with our shoe. However every so often we get reminded what a dangerous country we live in.

Six-year-old Melbourne girl Holly Smith was cleaning a shell she'd collected at the beach on Sunday when a blue-ringed octopus fell into her bath. The octopus had died from being out of salt water but it carries enough poison in it to kill 26 adults within minutes. They're often found in rock pools around our southern coast and although a bite isn't painful, the venom blocks nerve conduction and leads to neuromuscular paralysis followed by death.

There are dangers lurking further north too and it's not just the crocs. The box jellyfish has long been a very dangerous inhabitants in waters around far north Queensland but as our seas get warmer, they're swimming further south. They've even been found inland - 10 year-old Queensland resident Rachel Shardlow was swimming in the Central Queensland Calliope River and was bitten and almost killed by a box jellyfish. She was very lucky to survive thanks to some quick thinking by her parents and nearby campers.

With all that and the fear of shark attacks, it makes you want to stay on dry land...
